Train of Thought

Hi Lindas!

This post is inspired by the poetic peace of mind exclusive to cross-country train rides.

Wanderlust has got the better of me. This month, I have sat on enough trains to use the stubs as a paperweight! Trains to Cardiff, London, Nottingham et al. have left me with a a dizzy constitution and a head full of (needless?) existential reflection.

3 Thoughts On The Train

1. Maybe I like the idea of travel, but not travel itself.

When I book my tickets I am wild to be gone. Packing my bags, I am impatient to disappear into the foreign land. In my head I romanticise my holiday; I dream of comfort, beauty and adventure. I think of all the fun I'm going to have and the amazing scenery I might enjoy.
What I don't dream of, are practical things like checking into dodgy hostels and using small packets of soap...eating on the go, lugging a huge backpack, maps, walking, alertness, checking belongings and living out of a suitcase. These things can sometimes get tiresome!

It was easier living out the itinerary in my head, sitting on my bed.

2. The Sensory versus the Sublime

Finally I am at the mountain top. It is beautiful, but not sublime. Sensory experience disappoints me with its matter-of-fact clarity. My eyes, my senses cannot produce sense-images powerful enough to match the fantasy scenes I prepared in my head.

Of course I still enjoy the moment, the air is fresh and rich with inspiration. Yet relative to pure imagination, our actual experience, however magnificent, may seem underwhelming. (See Wordsworth on Mont Blanc)

Eg. Hypothetical Thought Process:
1. Can't believe I'm gonna see Paris! How romantic a city!
2. OMG look, there's the Eiffel Tower! (Take Photo)
3. Okay. So that is the tower.

3. Abandoning the Camera

There are memories, and then there are Memories.

The most precious experiences cannot always be captured by Kodak. The conversations with young strangers, the look shared between knowing friends, the inexplicable peace in a dodgy hostel bed after a long day's hike, the disgusting pathetic lunches and the surprises (good and bad) encountered on a journey- these are the Memories I protect. The rest will be on my camera!

Road Trip to Birmingham

This tie dye chiffon shirt is from Black Ribbon!

It is an extremely soft, emerald green shirt in real life and I adore it! The best part is that the buttons are covered by a layer of cloth, so the exterior is a smooth plain ombre without buttons interfering. The collar is a delicious solid green.

I wore it both to Wales and to Birmingham because it is so easy with my jeans. I wish they had more colours!

At the end of the day, I want to be with the people I love.
